One of my most vivid childhood memories is watching TV with my mom before bed and falling asleep on The Golden Girls. The older I got, the later I stayed up and I started watching the show. It has become one of my all time favorites and I’ll stand by that no matter who teases me! I decided to watch the entire series (instead of being productive of course) and realized that there are a lot of gems dropped on that show!
1. There’s no problem cheesecake can’t solve
If you watched the show this needs no explanation.
2. Chicks before… well you know
The girls went on many dates on the show, some good and most bad. But at the end of the day, they could always come home and talk it through with each other to feel better. Even when they had issues with each other they found a way to sit at the round table in the kitchen and work it out. In the words of Rose “It takes a big person to forgive after being called a slut!”
3. You’re never too old to go after your passion
Blanche strived to get her degree and Rose wanted to be a news anchor. They could have let their age stop them and give up at the first minor inconvenience but they did not! Blanche may not have passed the class she needed for her degree but she worked her butt off anyway. Rose was told she was too old to work at the news station but she did it anyway. If these fictional characters can give it all they have then why can’t I?
4. You’ll have many loves in your lifetime, stop worrying about the “one”
All the women had their husband who they loved dearly and while that was great they had many other types of love as well. The love of their parents, their children, their passions and each other. Romantic love is great but don’t forget there are plenty of other relationships that can make you feel whole.
5. A woman has every right to be sexual on HER terms.
When I was watching the show as a young teen I remember judging Blanche and agreeing whenever Sophia called her some form of the word “slut.” Now that I’m older I see the show was giving us a glimpse of a woman who was in charge of her own sexuality and had morals she stuck to as well. When her niece came to visit and was seeing a different man every night she disapproved saying “When I’m with a man it’s because I like him, not because I want him to like me.” Blanche lived life unapologetically and refused to censor herself out of fear of what others thought.
6. Live life to the fullest
I know a lot of twenty-somethings still cringe at the thought of being a “senior citizen” heck I still do. But Golden Girls showed us that life doesn’t end once you get to be a certain age. We only get one chance a life so we should do everything we desire while we’re here.
Thank you Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty for not only giving me one of my favorite shows but teaching me some life lessons along the way.
